2025-26 Smart Start Week 24

Last week, we were inspired by the letter N, and our classroom was filled with meaningful, hands-on experiences that sparked curiosity, creativity, and connection.

Our explorations invited friends to think deeply about both the natural world and the materials around them. We created beautiful negative space shamrocks, discovering how what we don’t see can be just as important as what we do. Conversations about nature led us to explore how everyday elements can be transformed—like sunflower seeds can be used to create butter as an alternative to traditional spreads. These moments encouraged children to see nature as both a resource and a source of inspiration.

A bit of playful mystery also found its way into our week, as some friends discovered that a mischievous leprechaun may have turned the inside of their cookies green! This sparked imagination, storytelling, and lots of wonder.

Food exploration continued as friends sampled different types of noodles, describing flavors and textures, and even voting on their favorites. Sensory invitations like noodle necklaces and hands-on noodle exploration supported both creativity and fine motor development, while sorting activities with letters, numbers, and St. Patrick’s Day themes strengthened early math and literacy skills.

Our investigations into nature deepened as we learned about nocturnal animals and how they are able to see in the dark. Friends also created edible nests, making thoughtful connections to how birds use materials from nature to build safe spaces for their eggs—just as we excitedly observed our own eggs in the incubator beginning to hatch right in our classroom!

Building and design were also an important part of our week. Friends constructed structures inspired by both man-made creations and natural formations like stalactites and stalagmites, blending imagination with observation. Dramatic play flourished in the Nurses Station and Home Center, where children nurtured, cared for others, and acted out real-life experiences.

Letter N week was a beautiful blend of nature, nurturing, noticing, and new discoveries. Through play, exploration, and creativity, our friends continued to build connections that support a lifelong love of learning.

See you soon,
