Smart Start Week 31

Last week, we journeyed into the exciting and mysterious world of the Letter X. While it can be one of the trickier letters in the alphabet, X sparked a week full of exploration, expression, and experimentation for our young learners. Through thoughtfully designed invitations and learning provocations, our classroom was rich with play, discovery, and connection.

Our literacy adventures included alphabet puzzles, letter formation practice, and hands-on word-building activities. Alongside this, our numeracy explorations ranged from counting and sorting to pattern-making and picture creation—helping to deepen foundational math skills in playful and meaningful ways.

Our builders and engineers were especially busy, constructing intricate railway systems complete with railroad crossings marked by bold red Xs. These creations provided a meaningful opportunity to connect letters with real-life symbols. Through imaginative role-play, friends took on the roles of conductors and engineers, guiding passengers along the railways they had carefully designed.

In our home center, nurturing play blossomed as children cared for baby dolls and engaged in pretend caregiving. These moments supported social-emotional growth and extended our ongoing conversations around understanding and expressing feelings. Another activity invited friends to match facial features to emotion cards, building empathy and emotional awareness.

In Visual Arts, our little artists created their own galaxies using a variety of sizes and colors. After splattering white paint on black paper to represent stars, each child selected and arranged planets and moons in their unique cosmic creation—some choosing a few large planets, others many small ones, and some a colorful mix. We also explored color mixing through hands-on experimentation, painting one hand with a primary color and the other with another, then rubbing them together to reveal a secondary color. It was messy, meaningful fun!

The Letter X also provided a great opportunity to explore scientific concepts like experimentation and cause-and-effect. Our young scientists brainstormed which liquids to test with Mentos, suggesting water, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, and Mountain Dew. After predicting which would cause the biggest “explosion,” the experiment began—and the biggest eruption came from Pepsi! We also revisited our mold experiment from Letter M week, observing how different conditions—like moisture, touch, or exposure to various surfaces—affected mold growth on bread.

To wrap up the week, we channeled our inner jockeys by designing colorful silks for the Kentucky Derby. We also chose materials—pool noodles and yarn—to create our own stick horses. Next week, we’ll use them to navigate obstacle courses and participate in our very own Smart Start Derby!

We hope you have had a wonderful weekend!
