Letter D week was delightfully delicious as we tried three varieties of donuts for Tasty Science. Lola's enthusiastic thumbs up showed just how tasty the donuts were. The overall favorite was glazed donut holes, followed by chocolate donut holes, and then blueberry donut holes. In Explorations in Science this week, we also had discussions about density, followed by a demonstration using honey, oil, dishwashing liquid, water, and rubbing alcohol. After layering these liquids, we dropped a marble in and watched it sink to the bottom. However, when we dropped a grape in, it remained suspended halfway through due to the different densities. We also used our hands as tools to dig in dirt! We examined the textures, discussed our findings, and compared potting soil with dirt from our yard and baseball fields. Then we filled seed starting trays and planted seeds, which we will use to observe the life cycle of a plant over the coming weeks. To conclude Letter D week, we talked about how paleontologists study dinosaur fossils and used air dry clay to create our own fossil imprints.
Did you know that dragons adore tacos and dinosaurs are fond of donuts? This week, our books confirmed this as fact, inspiring some of our Imagination Station and sensory activities. Friends crafted delicious tacos and flavorful donuts for eager patrons. Baby dolls transformed into children under the care of trusted babysitters. Dr. Seuss books and characters were some of the things used in our classroom to decorate for Read Across America week. Using those as inspiration, our imagination, and vibrant building tools, we were available to create whimsical, quirky objects just like those found in Dr. Seuss books.
Artists gathered around tables to design hearts, paint donuts and dinosaurs, and exchange stories while coloring Disney pages. Some duos chose to listen to Finding Dory together at our Listening Center. Others brought dinosaurs to life, roaming the earth, while rubber ducks floated in the sensory bin's pond. Dominoes were launched by a train and arranged perfectly so the smallest hands could see their designs succeed. And rest assured, our future dental care is in capable hands. We have a group that understands cavities, their causes, and the importance of brushing teeth until all grime and sugar bugs are gone! This week in Wiggle Room, we successfully navigated dinosaur obstacle courses, enjoyed a glow-in-the-dark dance party, and mastered the Fox in Socks rap!
To celebrate Read Across America week we invited guest readers to come into our classroom. Mr. Brian Young was our guest readers on Monday. He is responsible for keeping all of our ArtWorks locations up and running. Some of our friends see him other places and he is a familiar face to most. He visited our classroom on Monday and read The Wonkey Donkey. We were very thankful to have the opportunity to have not one, but two children’s book authors as guest readers. On Tuesday, Ms. Tobie Voils was our guest readers. She is a retired Jamestown Elementary Kindergarten teacher. She wrote a children’s book about her very own miniature horse and read it to us. It is called Fireball, A Horse of Course. The second author, Ms. Danielle Martin, was our guest reader on Wednesday. She is a mom of two little boys, August and Wade. She takes her book to the community ever opportunity she gets. Most recently she was at the JES Literacy Night. She read her book My Little Dear. Both of these lovely authors brought a signed copy of their book to donate to our library at Smart Start. 2024 Teacher of the Year, Mr. Donnie Wilkerson was our guest reader on Thursday. He brought books of all types to show our friends at Smart Start. He showed them books written using Braille, tiny books, gigantic books, and thick books. He read the book Tuesday, which has very few words. He also read Hop on Pop and demonstrated a new and engaging way to read books! Ms. Cheryl was a special reader for a story that we always enjoy. The Dinky Donkey is about the daughter of The Wonkey Donkey and is always sure to bring laughter and delight.
Next week we will end our week by traveling to ArtWorks on Main to explore the Art of Aerial Silks. If your child attends on Thursday there will be two forms sent to you on Remind. If you are unable to access or print them, there will be printed copies at drop off next week. We will need the forms returned before Thursday.
Have a great weekend,
Ms. Leah, Ms. Jacquita, and the Smart Start team
