Smart Start 2023-2034: Week 6

These precocious preschoolers printed, painted, puzzled, patterned, poured, and played pretend this week because it was all about the letter P!

Precise pouring! Strengthening hands and developing hand-eye coordination.

Our inspiration artists were Piet Mondrian and Pablo Picasso. Like Mondrian, our artists painted straight, black lines creating rectangles and squares. Next, using primary colors, students filled in just a few of the shapes.


During centers, students played and got creative with our Picasso blocks and Picasso tiles. We looked at some of Picasso's work and made Picasso Pumpkins.


In the Wiggle Room, Ms. Cheryl started a unit focused on The Brain Dance. Brain Dance is a simple routine designed to integrate and strengthen the brain-body connection. Created by Anne Green Gilbert, Brain Dance draws on the natural movements we make in the first 12 months of life. These movements help “wire” the brain for a healthy nervous system and foster a sense of wholeness. Ms. Cheryl sculpted a brain so our dancers could see the pathways!

Our books this week were a springboard for some really fun and interactive learning. We read Pumpkin Jack, a story about the life cycle of a pumpkin/Jack-O-Lantern. We cleaned out and carved our own pumpkin and will spend the rest of the school year watching him decompose, disappear, and then reappear in the spring!

We also read If You Give a Pig a Pancake. If you read a preschooler a book about a pajama-clad pig... chances are... they're going to ask you for a pancake! We love Laura Numeroff's books and who doesn't love a PJ day and making pancakes? While Ms. Marisa put pancakes on the griddle, we talked about how the batter is a liquid and the heat changed it into a solid. However, unlike the water we experimented with

a couple of weeks ago, our pancakes will not melt and turn back into a liquid. We talked about how things are made up of different elements and that means all liquids do not behave the same when heated up or cooled down. These experiments and activities help our students begin to think about our world and how it works. We love to spark curiosity and get them wondering!
